What is a TV listing magazine?
TV listing is the practice of organizing television shows or radio programs in a daily, weekly, or season-long schedule. Modern broadcasters use broadcast automation to regularly change the scheduling of their programs to build an audience for a new show, retain that audience, or compete with other broadcasters' programs.

What Types of TV listing magazines do we have?
In the United Kingdom we have a range of TV listing magazines the most established is the Radio times, this has been since 1923 and is produced by BBC magazines the magazine offers its audience information about scheduling of programs and featured programs in addition to new and upcoming programs. In the United Kingdom we also have a number of other listing magazines such as the TV guide and TV choice these publications offer more of a summary and cut version compared to the radio times.

What People use the Radio times for?
In order to discover what I need to do in order for my double page spread to maximise its appeal I had to find out what people viewed in a listing magazine whether that be the radio times or another publication. Furthermore I needed to know what stands out in their eye when browsing a listing magazine.
I asked 30 people to respond via monkey survey

Question one,
What is your primary use of a listing magazine?

Question two,
What do you look for in an article within that magazine that is focused on a new channel or program?

Question three,
What gains your attention most when scanning a listings magazine?

Overall from the results gathered my finding are that as a result of question one asked. What is your primary use of a listing magazine? nearly 50% used it for viewing program times and this is expected due to the genre of the magazine. This was followed by to gain information about programs and from that connection i would be able to link it onto my double page spread in terms of the audiance getting what they expected. So by including infomation about programs which are due to be aired on the station i am meeting that expectation.
Question 2,  What do you look for in an article within that magazine that is focused on a new channel or program? The majority of the 30 people responded by what the channel is going to feature and how its going to be diffrent from the rest ( This is in purple error on graph axis). So these are sub headings that i may wish to considor and i will decide this in my planning stage. what gains your attention most when scanning a listings magazine? In response to this question most people belived that the tag lines and images where the most effective when it comes to scanning the listing magazine, i belive this could be due to taking them out of the normal world of text.

Existing Double page spreads

In order to make my double page spread a realistic as possible I decided to look at double page spreads. From this in my planning and planning section I will be sure to take ideas of the double page spreads that are in existence in order to relate to existing media text, below are examples of double page spreads.

The double page spread above is from the radio times magazine and as you can see the majority of the page spread is covered by an image, however they have overlapped two images on the right half of the pages creating an effect on the human eye making us wanting to look by doing this they are appealing to are needs according to Maslow as wellbeing a desire as they are delivering what we want.  In regards to the text they have a line that tells you straight “Old – fashioned blood and guts “ these worlds are appealing however are also summing up the program for us in six words. They have also include a tag line which is shown below “behind the scenes” and it says “ Television from the inside out”  These words are relating to us humans in a sexual way but in this sense they are portraying it as you the audience can know you number one program from filming to airing. They have used a small amount of text the reason I believe they have done this is so they are not boring the reader and gaining there attention throughout.
