The reception that Dave received after its launch, within just one month of its launch, Dave had become the tenth largest television channel in the UK. The broadcaster puts daily averages at around 3 million viewers, although, much of the growth may be attributed to its presence on Freeview; nonetheless, it is performing significantly better in pay TV homes than UKTV G2 ever did. Television station websites home pages

This section researches three current Television stations home pages on their website and gives an analysis of each of the five.

The Image above is that of the home page for BBC one, in the top left hand cornor is the BBC one’s logo. This has been located here as typicaly in the western world we read right to left. However the BBC is positioned in the black top box at the top of the page. Along the black tool bar at the very top of the page is a number of hyperlinked pages that allow access to other areas of the site, to make the user experience more acessiable they have include a search bar within the home page which is located in the top right hand side of the page. As you look on to the lower two thirds of the page it features the viewing schedule on the channel and below that their as a video and to the left of that programs that are going to be aired in the near feature. The colour sceme on the page is connitated to the stations orginal launch.

Channel 4 home page is majioritly covered by an image relating to a featured program, the logo of the station is positioned on  the right hand side of the page and is transpired in the background to blend in with the image.  They have positioned the image in the way that the women center to the page.  They keep the webpage very similisitic in order to make it very nuteral and pleasant experience when viewing the webpage. They also display a timescale type feature at the bottem of the page  in which they have included their viewing schedule.

Sky one’s home page of their website is very simplistic, they have done this by keeping the text and image to a minuim they have kept the colours in line with the image of the tv station its self.  Inaddition to help the users experience as simple as possible they have included a search bar which allows users to explore other pages of the website hassle free. The image that sky one has chosen to use as its key art is a low angle shot, they have chosen this shot to show the power behind the image and the realtion to the tv title ‘STRIKE BACK PROJECT’ . Sky has chosen to allow its uses to intact with them on social networking website facebook this is displayed to the user in the bottem right hand cornor of the webpage.

Television stations website schedule page analysis

BBC 1

Upon entering their website once upon selecting the scheduling section the webpage below is displayed
upon selecting your preference of genre it comes up with the second webpage see below.

This is the webpage that is displayed directly hyperlinked from the BBC 1 main home page, after you select schedule. Upon being directed to this page you can see that the BBC have divided it in to categories.

After selecting the categories you wish to view a web page like the one to the left should appear. This page list the programs that are under this selection and displays the next scheduling time and if their is an online play option available for that program at present that the user can use to access the program
on demand.

Sky one scheduling page is displayed as a timescale format and have used more images rather than words to display to the audiance what they are going to offer. The format of the webpage keeps to the master format of that on their homepage.

Channel 4 TV listing page is similar of that of sky's however includes their other branded TV channels with it in order to make the browsing experience easier for the user they have also used a logo rather than text for the sub headings of the stations.

Survey results

The graph below shows the results from my survey that i carried out on monkey survey.com i got thirty responses in the end the point of carrying out the survey was to find out what people are looking for when it comes to website features and television content so i can mix both togather to create a great new TV channel website.

Q1
The aim of question one was to find out what genre of television do people prefer.

The result of question one shows that people who participated in the survey mostly watch Documentaries ( 8 people and this was shortly followed by Lifestyle ( 7 People)

Q2

The aim of question two was to establish at what time of the day so when it comes to my website creation i Tailor the themes and text titles to the mass.
The pie chart shows that people mostly browse the web between 6.00pm and 10.00pm, the reasons behind this is suspect are that people are returning from work at this time and want to know the latest however wont to access the key information at all times.

Q3

The aim of question three is to discover other people's views to catchy TV station names and do they actually work.

The results shows that 27 people belived that they worked and only 3 feel that they did not.

Q4

The aim of question four was to find out what skills when it comes to browsing the web do modern day people have, and how can i adapt the results collected for my web page.

The results collected show that 67% of the people who took part in the survey would rate their skills as good, therefore when it comes to the planning i think it will allow me to be more creative

Q5
Was

The survey shows that 23 people find interaction via social media helpful and only 7 people didnt find it helpful. This may simply be down to their age group.

Q6

The outcome of question six was to hopefully find out does peoples viewing habits change with what mood they are in at that given time.

The results of the survey show that 19 people feel that sometimes it does so therefore i would base my main planning on question one.

Q7

The aim of question seven is to establish if people are okay with ads being aired on the TV. from this i was hoping to see if i could include ads on my website to make it look more authentic and suited to the audiance on that page.

The results from the survey showed that over half the people who took the survey felt it did not distract their attention from the show. This surprised me as i personally feel it does.

Q8

The aim of question 8 to see if on my website i should use audio instructions to welcome people to the site.
.

From the survey it shows that around half of the people fell that their okay and one third of the people don't even notice them. and the rest feel that they are ever helpful or useless.

Q9

The aim of question 9 is to see how i can make the website stand out and what ways i can go about doing it and do i need to try and focus my viewers attention online constanly or refer them to the station.

The results of the survey show that people whom took  the survey spend more time online opposed to watching TV and only 1/8 of people spend more time watching TV than online.

Logo of TV channel analysis

The BBC ONE logo creates a bold image to one, when they view the logo the logo itself can be found on the BBC one website the channel itself and also when the listing schedule is displayed it is shown. The white on red work well as the white is a  nuteral colour the connations with the colour white are fresh and pure this is what the BBC may of linked to when they re barnded the logo. The red background surrounding the text brings the white closer to the human eye the connations of the colour red are love and evil however i belive the BBC wants to represnt their selfs to us in a loving way and caring for its audiance oppesed to the evil connation. Overall the BBC one logo is very attractive to the human eye yet is simple but effective.

The BBC two logo is effective in its colouring, however like the colouring the channel its self is specialist as  it focus on the non mainstream tv shows and more specialist shows. All of the BBC channels keep the White lettering in place to represent their brand image of the BBC. The number TWO in the logo is more centrailised that bbc one  and by doing this they are contasly attracting their audiance.
The ITV one logo is very attractive in what it features they take the same approch when it comes the white text within the logo as the BBC and they make the one stand out seprate from the yellow space by using a black bold font. The logo attracts the human eye by the coulouring of the yellow coulour connations of yellows are bright and shining. Therfore i fell that why itv does what it does with the colouring and the channel tries to inspire new viewers to its channel
                                                      with a logo like this.

Channels 4 logo is simple but gets the brand of the channel across to the audiance, and by that happening its effectifive as its simplistic design. The colouring of the black represents dark and lightless. I cannot see any links regarding the colouring to the channels offering so the only reason that i can see behind the colouring is the image of it.
Channel 5 have changed its logo earlier this year from just the number 5 to five in text, and as you can see they have embeded this in a circle. Channel 5 offers more series programs that one of shows and the cicle could incoprate the series represntation, than just design. They have followed the same idea when it comes to the text within the logo and have it white so when channel 5 designed their new logo they must feel that what the BBC 1 does and ITV also do is
very effective  and attracts the viewer.
Sky one simple  keep it to just text with now background and this is an very effective way and quite modern way when it comes to logo design. They have chosen blue for the colour design,  as the sky is blue and therefore a link is created between the logo and the actualy sky to the channel.

How my audience links with Maslows Hierarchy of Needs
By following Maslows Hierarchy of Needs i am able to pin point the type of people what type of people will visit my website.

The lowest level of the pyramid (physiological needs) will only be intrested in the raw content such as tv listing times these types of people are only interested in what gets them through each day e.g. food and water. On my website i need to accomdate these people as they may view the website, in search of somthing.

The next level up of the pyramid (security needs) they may only be visit the website if their is an upcoming episode of 'How to stay safe online'  as they will be worrying mainly about safety and survival e.g. they wont be looking for flashy images however they may find the audio instructions very benifical.

The level above (social needs) this will however this group of people will be interested this is because this group is all about love and friendship. So if people are interested in the same catagory of tv  they can socialise my talking about the tv they love.  Through a blog on the website for example and these people would use the social media options if i include these on the website.

The next level of the pyramid (esteem needs) this group of people are trying to find personal worth and social recognition. These people could view the website however i feel the main group i will target and aspire are social needs.

The top level of the pyramid (self-actualizing needs) aren't interested in other peoples opinions and only want to perform at their full potential. This would be good if i was to chose a serious Television style website.

Audiance profile
The age of the audiance that i am aiming my website for is people aged 20 - 40 the reasons behind my choice to base it around that age group is that they are a more of perfesional age group of people, so have limited time it comes to browsing the web for television listings etc. They will be wanting their information fast and easy to access as they do not have enough time to spend wasting for each little detail they want. When it comes to maslows higherachy of need the social esteem and self actualsation. will be my main foucus. The gender divide on the website wont exist and therefore it will appeal to everyone who views  the pages regardless of the gender of the person.

The style of what i am going to create my TV genre if is of the documantary style as from my surveyes and from that i have chosen to go with this genre.

Name for the TV channel - After looking at the options for names for a TV Channels i have decided on DTV (Documentry TV ) as this is effective on the audiance as it stands out from the regular names such as the documentry channel.
